Supplemental Readings, Week 8-9
May 10, 2011 § Leave a comment
And here is a moment you’ve all been waiting for: the final supplemental reading assignments of the term. During Week 8, we will be talking about new media and new technologies in the context of Media Literacy, aided by a set of insights from digital media scholar Lev Manovich and a brief summary of Dallas Smythe’s work on audience commodification. During Week 9, we will attempt to get a handle on the media criticism of Slavoj Žižek, a scholar who is viewed by many as a rockstar-like figure on the contemporary academic scene. Paul Taylor provides us with a coarse but helpful introduction to Žižek. We will also read Žižek’s introduction to fundamental concepts in Lacanian psychoanalysis, a theoretical tradition that is the foundation of his take on the media.
